Topic: Health Equity and the American Heart Association’s 2024 Impact Goal

Ricardo Hanel, MD., PhD is the Director of the Baptist Neurological Institute, Co-Director of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Surgery and Endowed Chair of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Surgery at Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville. Dr. Hanel is an endovascular and microsurgical neurosurgeon with significant experience in mechanical thrombectomy for stroke, endovascular and microsurgical treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. He has an extensive background in scientific research, academic achievements and healthcare practice in the neurosurgical and cerebrovascular field.

Dr. Hanel specializes in ground-breaking minimally invasive procedures to treat aneurysms, including flow diverter technology, stenting and coiling, as well as more traditional methods, such as clipping and bypasses. Dr. Hanel’s research includes a broad spectrum of cerebrovascular diseases, in particular, acute reperfusion therapies for stroke and flow diverters for intracranial aneurysms. Dr. Hanel’s expertise and dedication has led Baptist Jacksonville to achieving Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers, awarded only to hospitals that demonstrate the ability to expertly diagnose and treat complex stroke and cerebral hemorrhage around the clock – 24/7.

Dr. Hanel completed his medical degree from Universidade Federal Do Parana in Brazil. He earned his PhD from Universidade Federal Do Parana and State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. He completed his residency in neurosurgery from Hospital Nossa Senhora das Gracas in Brazil, endovascular clinical fellowship from SUNY at Buffalo, and skull base and cerebrovascular fellowship from the Barrow Neurological Institute.
